The Feeling are the last band you would expect to release a single about European sociopolitical history. But I Thought it was Over sees the purveyors of jaunty pop return with musings on the reunification of Germany.
Well, not quite. So camp it makes Mika look butch and as light and insubstantial as you would expect from the group that brought us such insights into life in the 2000s as I Love It When You Call, this story of an on-off relationship is interspersed with lines such as "You were there when the wall came down...Another year and the job was done, the republic was dead and gone".
Naturally, such an odd juxtaposition inspires a search for metaphor, but any such efforts come up blank, the bizarre references simply existing to be propped up by the camp '80s TV theme guitars and provide somewhere to hang the synthesiser frills littering the track as though the producer exploded a box of tricks in the mixing suite.
I Thought it was Over is a hateful song, the cartoon track practically writes its own awful hi-NRG remixes, while cynically attempting to add depth with absurd references. If you are already a fan of The Feeling, you probably won't be disappointed, if you are not fan of The Feeling, avoid this song like the plague -- which will probably get a mention in the follow up.
