When you're listening to the radio as background music and the usual stream of same-sounding songs meander by, there is sometimes one that is so outstandingly unusual that it yanks up your head and compels you to listen with a hypnotic focus. Mushaboom by Feist is one of those.
The dreamy first single off debut album Let It Die by this Canadian chanteuse is a delightful mix of upbeat folk, soul, jazz and cocktail lounge music. It's incredibly sensory and seductive, with delicate melodies telling tales of life in a cosmopolitan city that yearns for the idyllic country life.
The unforgettably avantgarde "mushaboom", spoken softly almost as an aside in the chorus, is the crowning moment in a song blithely accompanied by acoustic strums, laid-back piano tinkles and foot-tapping rhythms. The song magnificently stands out in a class of its own.
