Field Music - A House Is Not A Home (Memphis Industries)
UK release date: 15 January 2007
Imagine the bastard child of Denim, the Human League and Adam and the Ants, filtered through a piano riff borrowed from Beethoven. That's how good Field Music's new single A House is Not a Home is - plinky, bonkers, full of thrift store synths but completely and utterly brilliant for it, all in only just over two and a half minutes.
Add wry, cutting lyrics, almost operatic backing vocals, a danceable melody and you've got the best band to come out of Sunderland since Kenickie. There's humour, there's killer tunes and while they dispense with a chorus it's because they're so good they can be this flamboyant about breaking the rules.
This is the second single to be taken from their forthcoming second album Tones Of Town. Except that would be 'second album' as in 'second studio album' because they've already warranted a collection of B-sides and rarities - something most bands don't deserve until at least five albums into their career. They do.
