Fiery Furnaces - Crystal Clear (Rough Trade)

UK release date: 1 September 2003

Fiery Furnaces - Crystal Clear
Crystal Clear is the first single from the brother & sister duo's forthcoming album Gallowsbird's Bark, but this three-set CD is of sufficient class to separate them from those current fave raves of sibling similitude (you know who I mean).

Fiery Furnaces, their funny, free-form style a good distance away from the Old Testament origins of the band's moniker, take an infectious delight in their travelogue lyrical style. The lead track is a piano-fuelled 2-minute extravaganza filled with appropriate contemporary thrash. The secondary tracks deliciously cram their episodic arrangements with all sorts of unexpected appearances by accordions and vaudeville keyboards that sound like they were discovered in a long-lost Victorian jumble sale.

On this evidence, Fiery Furnaces sound like a lot of fun. You could do a lot worse with your money than buy this for whatever it is that singles go for these days. Roll on the album release.
