With Charlie Simpson's former Busted compadre James Bourne shouting his mouth off that he wrote all of Busted's songs (would you really admit to such a thing? Doh!) and trying to win over the pre-pubescents with his new band Son Of Dork, the timing is right for Simpson to show that The Bourne Supremacy really is a piece of fiction...
Grand Unification begins with the now familiar Fightstar tradition of fast, driving guitars leading to a more held-back verse. This time Simpson's raw voice dominates proceedings and although there are plenty of layered vocals in the background, it's a shame that Alex Westaway's more dulcet and fully complementary tones don't appear as much as in previous singles.
The chorus is suitably tortured yet healthily sized, and there's a blistering but oh-so-short heavy metal chug two minutes in - all of which makes this perfectly likeable but Fightstar's weakest offering yet. Still stomps all over crappy pop, masquerading as punk, and played by (sons of) dorks though...
