There are songs that sound great live and there are songs that sound great on record. And then there are songs that work both ways, and this is the camp into which Fionn Regan's Be Good Or Be Gone firmly falls.
You might not think it on first listen (unless, like me, your first listen was at a live concert rather than via the CD player) because Be Good Or Be Gone is a phenomenally delicate song, a barely whispered acoustic folk melody that slips past like a warm summer breeze. Poetically charming lyrics, pristine finger-picking and a voice to complement them, it's a top contender in a field awash with interesting and worthwhile new singer-songwriters.
As if to reinforce its dual worth as music to lie on the grass with on a warm summer afternoon - in your own back garden or with a festival crowd - the accompanying video has segued together a number of Fionn's live performances into a single stream. The recorded version doesn't include his admirable efforts to get the audience to sing along but close your eyes and imagine you're there. It's a wonderful feeling.
