Old Scots post-punk/punk/funk stalwarts from the Postcard label era never die, they just get re-issued. Step forward the Fire Engines to get a dusting down for a re-release of their seminal Discord single.

Discord itself propels itself along at breakneck speed on a white-boy funk bassline, stabs of nasty (but nice) tinny 'discordant (hey!)' guitar and the kind of frenzied shambolic drumming that conjures up some nasty images of science teachers dancing.

The sound of the Fire Engines in their sprightly, bounce punk and 'smarter than thou' lyrics (albeit undecipherable) can be heard in pop whippersnappers Franz Ferdinand (with whom they share a label nowadays) and other young blades such as Bloc Party, The Futureheads and all. Not just for music archivists tracing today's roots, but for visceral thrills from a time when it really was about music careering out of control and not a 'career' in music.
