Following the Yeah Yeah Yeah Song, The W.A.N.D (or The Will Always Negates Defeat) is the second single from The Flaming Lips' mostly positively received album At War With The Mystics.
As usual with The Flaming Lips, you can expect something out of the ordinary with their new track. The W.A.N.D, as well as being bizarrely named, is like a trip through a landscape of heavy, insistent riffs, floated over by the ostensibly light voices of the band, who seem to be singing about a fight against despotism or corporatism, saying "I've got a tricked out magic stick that will make them all fall".
So The W.A.N.D is as odd a song as one would expect from The Flaming Lips. However, importantly, it's also quite listenable, probably heavily due to the riff that follows the song throughout. As a single, it's very successful; it's listenable enough so as not to lose you, and curious enough to make you want to pick up the album. Good stuff all round.
