She's probably already near the top of most people's draft lists of 'ones to watch in 2009', but Florence & The Machine seems to have been with us for a fairly long time already. She appeared at most festivals this year, Kiss With A Fist was nigh-on inescapable over the summer (partly thanks to T4), and those beguiled by her eccentric live shows have found all manner of delightful demos nestling in every nook and cranny of cyberspace.
Dog Days Are Over only seems likely to add to her already burgeoning reputation. While not as immediately catchy as Kiss With A Fist, it's an urgent, pounding, almost bluesy anthem which shows off Florence's voice to its very best advantage - swooping, howling, and whispering, sometimes within the same verse, she's one of the best vocalists to be uncovered in the last 12 months. And is the lyric "the horses are coming" a knowing reference to Patti Smith? Probably not.
Following with her tradition of some finely chosen cover versions, there's even an excellent rendition of The Source's You Got The Love. The debut album really can't come soon enough.
