Foals - Hummer

Formed from the ashes of The Edmund Fitzgerald, and taking on elements from the likes of Youthmovies, Foals have emerged as one of the most promising bands on the scene at the moment. Describing themselves as 'indescribable' (or not sounding like anyone else) is a fairly confident move, but it's not too far from the truth.

Singer Yannis may casually mention Steve Reich, but Hummer has much more in common with contemporaries Battles. Like them, Foals take post-punk/new wave and mix it in with the kind of glitch electronica that Warp release on a regular basis. Essentially Foals would be a New Wave band were it not for their keen sense of efficiency, and the reductive nature of their music and lyrics.

That Hummer initially sounds like it has been designed by a nerd with a set square and a house full of furniture that only has 90 degree angles shouldn't put you off. Yes it is angular, but happily Foals have managed to find room for a tune in amongst all those seemingly random guitars. They may sound like they're singing about Pokemonin places, but more interestingly they definitely state that "we are everywhere"; which on this evidence, they almost certainly will be before the year is out.
