Foreign big-on-the-underground Beggars are a talented young UK hip hop five-piece. With their own rappers, their own DJ, beat-boxer and producer, and their own independently released critically acclaimed debut LP, it would seem Foreign Beggars like to hold their musical cards close to their chest, right?
Wrong. With Slow Broiled Ilk, Foreign Beggars diversify their sound by enlisting the help of OhNo and Dubbledge. At first abrasive, by the end mesmerizing, Slow Broiled Ilk is a dark, lethal journey through the newest sounds in hip hop. The production (courtesy of Foreign Beggar Dag Nabbit) is goliath, and crisp to the minutest detail.
B-sides Backdraught and Hot Plate are both equal to Slow Broiled Ilk, in both addictiveness and intensity, an intensity that you can almost feel physically draining you. It's edgy stuff. Foreign Beggars are a timely reminder that the UK hip hop scene, despite its lack of coverage, is far from stagnant. In fact, it's as creative as ever, and sounds brilliant.
