Whether you would admit it or not, there is certainly no denying that this year's mammoth hit, Stacy's Mom, was an instantly catchy song that raised a few eyebrows (as well as raising something else) with an instantly eye-catching video. The talented New York quartet Fountains Of Wayne certainly have an undeniable knack for composing contagious mini-pop songs that hit the right nerve.
Unlike the infectious tone of the aforementioned single, Hey Julie is a mellow, sweeter affair. As their official website says, the song has an "acoustic based intimacy" which is hard to dislike. It moves along slowly, with simple back-to-basic chords, an harmonica, lighthearted vocals and the obvious introverted lyrics.
Taken from their hotly anticipated third album - 2003's Welcome Interstate Managers - Hey Julie will probably not cause an earthquake in the charts - but it is still a finely crafted, well tuned little number that should gain quiet recognition.
