If you've just bought a new CD player, don't let the latest single from Four Tet's Kieran Hebden loose on it. There's a sequence about half a minute in that sounds like a locked hi-fi, and which could variously be described as inventive or irritating...
I would tend to plump for the latter - there's a funky riff at the root of this record, and it gets spliced, cut and pasted at seemingly random intervals in a quirky fashion. Stretching it out for twenty three minutes on a live version is a bit much though, and the white noise and obsessive bleeps mean you'll be doing well to make it past half way.
Better to plump for the more acoustic third mix, where a warm bass sound and softer, leisurely beats make the best of Hebden's limited material.
