Pockets is taken from the latest addition to the DJ Kicks line, which
will give Kieran Hebden the chance to join such luminaries as Thievery Corporation, The Glimmers and Daddy G in
presenting his own take on his favourite tracks.
The album isn't out until the end of the month, but you can have a
preview of what's on offer courtesy of this 12" single, comprising the
track that Hebden himself has created for the compilation's
mix-one-of-your-own tradition (a bit like Duran Duran covering
themselves on Thank You, except the rest of the album will probably be worth
listening to as well).
You can choose between two versions: the dancier (more kickin'?) one has
a great, thumping backbeat, and Pockets (Minimal) is, as you'd expect: more
laidback with less bpm. Both tracks mix jazz percussion and light, heady
synths guaranteed to tempt you onto the dancefloor, though on the minimal
version the headscape is a little more relaxed.
Hebden's collaboration with Steve Reid is in the shops now and, with the
full DJ Kicks due out soon, he's certainly been busy but he's far from
stretching himself too thin. If this is a taste of what¹s to come, the DJ
Kicks compilation will be well worth getting.
