The demise of Million Dead led many to worry if, and when, we would hear Frank Turner’s inspired lyrics again. Fear no more, then - having done a little time lending his undeniable stage presence to label-mates Reuben, he’s back with an EP that does exactly what it says on the label and very well too. In case we don’t get it, he makes it even clearer on the opening track, explaining that he was "raised in middle England, not in Nashville Tennessee, and the only person in my band is me". Well, Frank by name...

Stripped of the Dead’s post-hardcore battery, Turner is on the way to becoming a less sanctimonious Billy Bragg. He certainly points the finger in the same direction, especially on Thatcher Fucked The Kids. However you get the impression that Turner can recognise a Thatcherite Prime Minister even if they wear a red rosette, and that he’s not interested in preaching anyway, just telling it as it is (or as it appears).

Telling it, in fact, as he always has done - just this time you can hear all the words, and be singing along in no time. So, although we have no idea how far Turner will choose to take his new direction, this is a damn good start. To any who have been mourning Million Dead, it's an essential listen.
