With Franz Ferdinand we have become accustomed to no messin', addictive, dynamite pop songs, with lightning bolt hooks that electrify the memory of anyone within earshot. Eleanor Put Your Boots On, however, represents something of a U-turn on the stock Franz sound, and is perhaps a strange and even unwelcome single choice for some.
The song is far more stripped down, relaxed, acoustic, atmospheric than previous frenetic releases, and has a distinct Bowie tinge to it, particularly in the vocal work of Alex Kapranos, whose usual direct approach is far more subtle and considered.
It is nice to see Franz Ferdinand add a dose of variety to their sound and the song is perfect happy-go-lucky summer pop - after all, we are experiencing a heatwave - but you can't help but muse that this band are always going to be at their best when they're banging out those stonking, foot-stomping, pop beats a la Take Me Out and Do You Want To.
