Taken from their upcoming third album Tales Don't Tell Themselves, Funeral For A Friend's latest outing Into Oblivion heralds the beginning of an distinctive new sound for the Welsh lads, resonating a stadium-lighters moment that'd put even good ol' Bon Jovi to shame.
It's a delightfully accessible chunk of modern rock, forgoing the gruff post-hardcore assault of their Casually Dressed And Deep In Conversation debut and the clunky mass-appeal grit of it's 2005 follow-up Hours, whilst all along managing to still (somehow) sound distinctly Funeral. Vocalist Matt Davies sings candidly the tale of self-discovery and emotional yearning; something best exemplified by the bridge refrain of "will you be the same as when I saw you last / tell me how much time has passed", and though the guitars do, on the whole, resonate a far shinier sound than previously heard from the Valley boys, it's a progression that seems wise in terms of the bands growing maturity and tact.
Just how close this is to representing the overall sound of Tales Don't Tell Themselves is something we'll unfortunately have to wait a tad longer on, but for now, thankfully, it's thumbs - and fists - well and truly skyward for Wales' favourite rock-types.
