Funny old game, the music business. Only a year ago The Futureheads seemed dead and buried and destined to be known as 'that band who did that funny Kate Bush cover version'. Dumped by their record label after their underperforming second album, it seemed as if they'd been swallowed up by the big machine, never to be heard of again.
However, showing some typical north-east grit, the band dusted themselves down, set up their own record label and released the best album of their career with the excellent This Is Not The World. Positvely buzzing with righteous indignation and fury, it's impossible to see Walking Backwards as anything other than an attack on their former paymasters: "walking backwards, with nothing to say" bellows the chorus.
It's not particularly different from other Futureheads stuff, but it's impossible not to be carried along with the song's energy and blistering attitude. A shining example of indepedence, the Futureheads are walking backwards no longer.
