The Ga*Ga*s are the brainchild of angst-ridden singer Tommy Gleeson.
Their manifesto is to rock harder than anyone. Their testament to this is
the single Left Of Centre, taken from the debut album Tonight The Midway Shines.
When one thinks of genuinely excellent hard rock bands one might think of
the late At The Drive-In, and the subsequent Mars Volta. The
Ga*Ga*s on the other hand sound more like Good Charlotte having a
tantrum. Left Of Centre sounds unoriginal, hosting a cluttered chorus and
smatterings of uncreative lyrics. Not even Gleeson sounds like he's having
fun.
To say that this band are not talented however would be a lie. At times
they flirt with changes in time signatures and some of the guitar work is
impressive. The problem with The Ga*Ga*s is that they sound like a
thousand other bands that have done/are doing the same thing. If they really
want to be successful they might have to consider pushing both their own
boundaries, and the boundaries of their genre.
