Dreams is one of the darker cuts from The
Game's The Documentary album, but it's also one of the
most profound. Featuring Kanye West, it name
checks an awful lot of people - even for a rap record.
It seems the main protagonist has a lot on his mind,
mulling over the tragically early deaths of his
contemporaries on one hand, yet pondering Martin
Luther King, Ronald Reagan and Eazy E on the
other.
In the wrong hands this could sound crass, but for
once the vocalist sounds genuine, helped by the "Cos I
love you" sample and the "dream" that punctuates each
phrase of the chorus, seemingly from No Money Down by
Jerry Butler.
It is effective and memorable, and if you haven't
yet played The Game and heard his wide range of
sounds, you'd be well encouraged to do so. He's one of
the rap discoveries of the year, and it's to be hoped that
his tiresome posturing with 50 Cent doesn't get
in the way of this.
