Reviewing a record on first listen can be a daunting task. Sometimes what you're hearing is so stale and contrived that it's hard to cough up the passion to dismiss it. Others offer promise of future greatness but with some further work needed.
And then there's record like New York geniuses Gang Gang Dance's new EP Rawwar, which is so full of ideas and ingenuity in its first track alone (the utterly addictive Nico Man) than most current bands manage to cough up in the space of an entire long-player.
Though perhaps difficult to digest at first, it soon reveals itself to take you places that music should do, loops and screams and tempo changes that would make The Boredoms blush. Think Bjork waltzing through a fairground, making friends with the Animal Collective on the way before catching a cab home with Liars. It's a rubbish analogy, but it's staying here and makes a lot of sense if your ears have been lucky enough to hear this piece of heaven.
