When New Jersey quartet The Gaslight Anthem released their debut LP earlier this year, it was met on these shores with widespread critical acclaim. NME, ever the protagonists of anti-hyperbole, called it the best album of 2008.
Old White Lincoln is the second single from said album, and its charm will be the undoing of me. Vocalist Brian Fallon's delivery is equal parts Brandon Flowers and Springsteen, and as the chugging rhythm section drives along, a dusty Americana essence remains present throughout.
The guitar melodies are brilliant, as is the heartfelt delivery of Fallon's bittersweet musings. Backed by a stunning live acoustic version of The '59 Sound, it's not hard to see why the hype machine went into overdrive for The Gaslight Anthem. They may well have been overhyped in a year of music that has dicked all over 2007, but there's something very, very likeable about this band.
