Remember the film The Commitments? If you do, you'd probably have thought that the biggest success would have been Andrew Strong, the lead singer of the fictional band with a voice way beyond his years. Yet while Strong seems to have disappeared without trace, fellow Commitment band member, and sometimes leader of The Frames, Glen Hansard quietly picked up an Oscar this year.
Hansard, together with his real-life partner Marketa Irglova, was responsible for the wonderful film Once, a gorgeously wistful tale of two lonely souls in Dublin. Falling Slowly was the track that won them the Best Song Oscar, a well deserved reward for one of the most beautiful songs you'll hear all year.
There's a definite Damien Rice feel to the song, with Hansard and Irglova's voices blending perfectly together over the haunting melody. You don't need to have seen the film to fall in love with it, but if you've not seen it, you're missing out.
