Looking for bliss? A sense of purpose? Some exquisitely well-crafted synth-pop? Then you're searching for Happiness, the latest single from Goldfrapp's woosied-out Seventh Tree.
Floating in on a lullaby is lead singer Alison's lilting, breathy voice which, with the words "join our group and you will find harmony and peace of mind," sets in motion a rather enticing advertisement for a religious cult. It's not all sunshine and serenity, though, as, despite the continually ethereal sonic qualities of the track, the initial promises give way to guilt ("we can see your troubled soul") and demands for donations ("give us all your money").
Ulterior motives aside, Happiness is brimming with wonderfully lush, ambient pop. Synthesized tones frolic with packs of piano, flute and trumpets. The dreamy and psychedelic ambience, which summons the work of The Beatles and Air (note the trailing echoes brought forth by the last syllable of "better," a trademark of Goldfrapp's French counterparts), is offset by an Abba-inspired disco refrain.
All in, this is enchanting cult propaganda that encourages you to open your ears, mind, and wallet.
