Goldie Lookin' Chain - You Knows I Loves You (Atlantic)
UK release date: 13 December 2004
It's time to don your tracksuit and trainers and get ready for more of the same from chav-rap's finest. Their special blend of Morris Minor and the Majors meets The Streets has caused childish smirks and disapproving frowns in equal measure since they emerged from the Newport hip hop underground (not East Coast, not West Coast - but South Coast, Wales) and You Knows I Loves You sees them continue in much the same vain.
As Eggsy, The Maggot, Dwain P Xain and crew tell us how they would wine and dine the object of their affections (at McDonalds by candlelight), we are treated to the usual flow of comedy lyrics: "You're Victoria Spice, I'm David Beckham / If you were Delboy, I'd be the streets of Peckham."
But where do GLC go from here? The novelty of the so-called "Beastie Boyos" will surely wear off soon, but one thing that should keep them around a while longer is the fact the music behind the gag-hop is actually quite good - the funky seventies sample on this track guaranteed at least to get you on the dancefloor making an arse of yourself at this year's Christmas party.
