If ever there was a genre of music that needed taking down a peg or two, then it's R'n'B; a style of music that seems to have completely lost its way of late. When music takes a back seat to bling, posturing and astromically expensive and ludicrous videos, then surely alarm bells should be ringing. R'n'B stars these days are more interested in making clothing and soft drink brands than making good records. George Clinton of legendary funkateers Parliament once said: "It's rhythm and blues, man, not rhythm and business." If only anyone had listened.
With this in mind, the Goldie Lookin' Chain should have plenty to aim at with this piss take, but they were obviously a little bit stoned when they wrote this. It's not that R'n'B is a bad song; there's plenty of well-observed stuff here. You just can't help wishing that they'd really got stuck in.
The samples and references are knowing, and the attempts at boy band vocal gymnastics are spot on. It's so well done that if you weren't listening closely, you could well imagine this on Top Of The Tops performed by a bunch of pretty boys who get up off their stools every time they get to the chorus. It has to be said that Goldie Lookin' Chain have missed the mark a little here, but it's probably not entirely their fault. The problem perhaps is that R'n'B is pretty much impossible to parody; purely because it's a parody of itself at the moment.
