Tipped as one of the UK's best new bands, Kent quartet GoodBooks would do well to give an attentive public something to sink their teeth into. Cue The Illness, taken from their forthcoming, as yet untitled, album, and a release date long after festival season has begun. If the single hints at the treats to come, however, then it could turn out to be a very cunning ploy indeed.
The instant appeal of the band is clear from the off; a thumping, mechanical beat, part Bloc Party and part Electric Six, kicks the track into a relentless, energised indie-pop feel that feels inexplicably warming.
Frontman Max Cooke (whose delightful vocal in a pounding chorus could do little more than remind me of Ewan McGregor in Moulin Rouge), provides a sheen to proceedings that gives that much needed dose of accessibility. In short, believe the hype; GoodBooks are about to become the summer read that you won't be able to put down.
