On the 90th anniversary of one of the most famous and bloodiest battles of the First World War, GoodBooks release a single named after the Belgian village where it was fought. So then, poignant reminder of the struggle and futility of war, or cheap publicity stunt hoping to cash in on the back of a bit of popular history interest?
The verdict comes down on the side of the latter, unfortunately. With its vaguely new rave backbeat building a foundation for pretty humdrum indie guitars, there's little here to recommend it.
GoodBooks may claim it tells the tale of a father and son who both fought in the Great War, and its hook of the repeated phrase "Never again" does stand out, but not enough to overcome the cheery dance beat that seems at odds with the subject matter.
It's all a bit pointless really, just like the war itself. If only I thought that they're clever enough to be making that point deliberately...
