Grand National are on a roll. Their LP Kicking The National Habit released in May 2004 was met with encouraging reviews and their mix of funk indie has wetted the lips of the music press and fans alike.
This single, taken from the debut LP does not disappoint, even though it is a marked oddity. Its funky guitar twang intro that threatens to launch into The Average White Bands' Pick Up The Pieces instead leads into the simplest of melodies, sweet, slight and effectively consuming. The tune doesn't change key throughout and it has a strange circular feel, almost a round that presumes against pop, and yet still is. The vocals led by Lawrence Rudd, muted with a lower harmony ease the track along, pleasantly supported by a twang bass and the odd cow bell. Lulling and lazy.
There is nothing startling about this single, it neither surprises or invents, but simplicity is its' fuel and strength and it surely promises an even bigger and better 2005 for them.
