Grandaddy may look like a bunch of plumbers, with some frankly alarming beards, but they are capable of music of heart stopping beauty.

El Caminos is a beautifully upbeat offering, with none of the angst of previous offerings on show here. Jason Lyttle's plaintive vocals perfectly suit the summery melody - the touching lyrics of the chorus ("I'll paint the words a simple wish / For peace of mind and happiness") make this one of the singles of the year.

The success of The Flaming Lips has proved that there's still a market for intelligent left-field rock - hopefully Grandaddy will become the latest beneficiaries.
