Jesus Of Suburbia is the fifth single to be lifted off Green Day's multi million selling American Idiot album, and is quite probably the best song on that record. It effectively caps off what has been a monumental 12 months for these pop punk godfathers - they've become one of the biggest bands in the world (again), so why not release a nine-minute song just because they can?
It's certainly the most ambitious thing they've ever done (Think in terms of Paranoid Android, Bohemian Rhapsody) - split up into five sections, or mini songs, the vague theme of protest towards modern day American society is adhered to ("Everyone is so full of shit! Born and raised by hypocrites"), as is their splendidly catchy sound.
There are few songs of this length that can keep one interested for its duration, but this track does just that. With constant changes of pace and tune and a series of soaring choruses, it's nothing short of captivating. As a stand alone single, it's probably quite futile, but nevertheless it serves as a perfect display of a band at the very top of their game.
