A popular topic on the OMH forums is the age-old 'songs to play at your funeral' debate. As I shuffle of this mortal coil I can think of no better track than Do You Realize by The Flaming Lips - one of the best songs of the last decade and a simplistic, earnest heartbreaker.
It's with some curious trepidation that I approached this Jazz cover. It's an intriguing prospect, but one which the silky smooth tones of Gretchen Lieberaum seems to struggle with at few stages. The result is a sanitised rendition with all too perfect instrumentation more easily filed under Easy Listening then Jazz.
Whoever sings this you'll still find the powerful lyrics will maintain a heartbreaking power. But it's easy to miss Wayne Coyne's honest vocals. As it stands Liebraum's soft tones don't betray a huge range of emotion and what could have been an excellent experiment feels a little safe with no risks taken across the board. Its pandering to the average means you can expect it to be played at a funeral in an ITV drama soon. Sad to say I'll be sticking with the original for mine.
