Three singles into her solo career and it seems as if the feisty Ms Stefani is on track to replicate her success with No Doubt. Hollaback Girl is another very different single from Stefani - in fact it's unlikely you'll hear another record released like this all year.
For want of a better phrase, Hollaback Girl is bubblegum cheerleader pop. Produced by The Neptunes, it lays down a marching band rhythm before Gwen appears with a call and response lyric. It's real 'love it or hate it' stuff - it's easy to imagine people diving for the off switch when it comes on the radio - but Stefani's personality keeps it on the right side of likeable.
Don't spend too much time listening to the lyrics though - even by Stefani's middling standards, they're risible at best. There's talk of "putting your pom-poms down" before a cry of "this shit is bananas". And as for what or who a Hollaback Girl actually is, that's never disclosed. I guess that's hardly the point though.
