After months of hiding under the duvet in a form of self imposed hibernation it's finally safe to come out. Spring is here, the sun's out, mowers are mowing, and birds are tweeting: fantastic.

What's this on the doormat? A new single from Hearts of Black Science? Ah well, back to the duvet then. Not to escape from harsh reality you understand, it's just that this Swedish duo create the kind of synth pop that could well freeze the blood in your veins. Empty City Lights is driven by a motorik drum pattern while synths and guitars weave a post rock gloom behind the wonderfully warm but detached vocals of Daniel Änghede. You'll be glad of that duvet - it'll start to feel like a womb before the end of the song.

There are elements of Shoegazing at play here, as well as hints of Depeche Mode, but Empty City Lights is much more than a sum of its parts. It's a haze of contradictions (warmth vs cold, simplicity vs complexity) battling each other and creating a truly exceptional song. Hearts of Black Science are definitely a band to watch out for in the upcoming months.
