Hefner's The Hefner Brain is for all intents and purposes an EP of five tracks, headed up by When The Angels Play Their Drum Machines, from recent album Dead Media.

The other four tracks are new offerings, not found on the album, yet they continue the band's flirtation with electronica rather than the guitar-based rock of We Love The City. While instrumentation may have changed lately, Darren Hayman's songs are still as infectious, even bumptuous, as ever.

Dark Hearted Discos sounds like Gary Numan with a sense of humour. The Baggage Reclaim Song is a variation on the theme, full of manic analogue keyboard noises. After Can't Help Losing You, All I'll Ever Need strikes a melancholy note to finish off the release with Hayman offering a solo of piano and voice. Priced as a single, this is good value.
