Naming yourselves after an old Rolling Stones tune is a pretty neat way to state your intentions. In this case it's a little misleading, as you may be expecting great rock riffs and the sound of snake hips being committed to CD. However, Hey Negrita, like the Stones of years gone by at least manage to demonstrate a stern heart and plenty of endearing attitude.
What you actually find in the guise of Old Britannia is something that you would more than likely find emanating from a Whiskey Joint in the Old Wild West. Oh yes, there may well be a smattering of honky tonk piano, and there's even a banjo in there, but there's little in the way of Yee Haw's. This is melancholic stuff; not so much Butch Cassidy on his bicycle as Butch and Sundance facing off with the Bolivian Army.
B side Come on Jane is a little more straightforward. It's straight down the line, and makes no attempt to sugar a bitter pill. Gone are the American Country sounds, instead this gently seething tune brings to mind End Credits by the criminally underrated Laptop. Good stuff then, but something tells me that their not likely to become a summer singles band anytime soon.
