True indie does true pop properly so infrequently that it really is a joy when bands like The Hidden Messages come along. From opening track Such A Disgrace, it's clear that they're neither disposable nor manufactured but celebratory enough that you'll want to smile for the duration their little record is on, without it demanding you think about them again for the rest of the day.

The London five-piece play guitars, violins, euphoniums, bass, melodicas and all the other instruments The Magic Numbers last convinced us had a life outside of the local infants school music day and they also share swoony, sixties-tinged, upbeat shoegazey sensibilities with Romeo and his pals. It's the type of music bands like The Feeling and Captain are reclaiming from twee-core without betraying.

All four of the songs on this lovely little EP would be worth a track listing on its own. At just under 15 minutes long it's not quite an album but there's a very good reason for that: The Hidden Messages aren't making the type of music that album bands do best. Like all the best sweets, you probably won't want to have too much of it in one go but in small doses, each of the songs here is a lovely little treat.
