America has Simple Plan, a bunch of spotty Blink 182 heirs whose album has just gone platinum, and we have The Holiday Plan who, thankfully, have bit more of an edge to them whilst still harbouring designs on widespread commercial appeal.
The Plan's second EP ain't gonna change your world but there are signs of promise here, for sure. Wasting Time is elevated beyond conventional moody punk (aka "emo") by a cool guitar solo three-quarters of the way through; Green Lights & Stop Signs changes rhythms in deft fashion; Stories almost rings out an epic quality to its guitar riffs; and the wryly-titled Black Clouds Over Hackney is a slow-burner that builds from a softly-sung intro into a restrained piece of chugging guitars and doodling bass-lines.
Time will tell if these London boys can break through to the sort of success seen by Welsh wonders Funeral For A Friend. For now, more touring and EPs that grow from this one should see their profile rise in proportion to their aptitude. Sound like a plan?
