There are more than enough cooler-than-thou new wave synth bands out there, pedalling catchy, happy party tunes that are just designed to turn up loud and frug like a mad person to. CSS, New York Pony Club, LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture - do we need another one in Holy Hail?
The answer, when the songs are so damn good as Cool Town Rock, is a definite yes. The bass throbs menacingly like an early New Order song, synths sparkle and glisten in equal measure and there's the inevitable sound of a cowbell thrown in. Meanwhile vocalist Cat effortlessly croons lyrics about "throwing my hair back" and looking cool in New York City.
No, it's not particularly revolutionary, but like their previous single Born Of A Star it's so ridiculously classy, stylish and catchy that you can't help but be swept along by the aural glamour on display. Look out for Holy Hail - coming to an indie dancefloor near you throughout 2008...
