Hood - The Lost You (Domino)

UK release date: 8 November 2004
Hood - The Lost You
Hood were one of the countless bands championed by the sadly departed John Peel, and in some ways that may give you an idea what this EP sounds like (i.e. it won't sound like Girls Aloud) yet, paradoxically, no idea at all (i.e. it could be gabba techno, thrash metal or Bulgarian folk music). Suffice to say that means this is not run of the mill chart fodder and has the experimental, challenging edge that everyone's favourite DJ used to appreciate and celebrate so much.

Taking fractured samples, glitchtronica beats and adding some Beck-like vocals this is music that is interestingly leftfield and refreshingly unordinary but not weird purely for the sake of it. From the folk-flecked dark drama of the title track through the druggy haze of You Can't Breathe Memories to the hauntingly beautiful classical violin and raining piano keys of By Island Lake, Hood provide an unpredictable listen that is at times melancholic and at others stirringly upbeat.

For people who are sick of swallowing manufactured, vomit-inducing, sugar-saturated pop pap, this is the sort of music that Simon Cowell must find absolutely baffling and is all the better for it.
