Poor old Hot Hot Heat. A few years ago, there was nobody quite like them - choppy guitars, a synth-based dance sound that still went heavy on the guitars, and a vocalist who recalled the '80s while remaining resolutely cool. Now, while The Killers and The Bravery grab the plaudits and festival headline spots, the Canadian band are still trying to break into the mainstream.

Middle Of Nowhere is slightly atypical of the album Elevator in that it's a bit of a slowie. While it's missing the relentless energy of the band's other material, it possesses a killer of a catchy tune and some witty lyrics that vocalist Steve Bays delivers perfectly ("Blame the caffeine for all the 5 am phone calls"). It pulls off the trick of being polished and smooth while avoiding being bland, and there aren't many bands who can do that.

Another great song from Hot Hot Heat, but it was ever thus - hopefully this one will break them into the bigtime.
