This is a strange mix indeed. Pink Squares is awash with keyboards that yearn to be pounding away like they used to back in the early 90s when rave was on the increase: when you'd spent hours videoing yourself dancing on top of your car in fluorescent trousers just so you could send it to Normski on Dance Nation. That they fail on this score is of no consequence; that the keyboard lines sound too clean, almost naïve in fact, is all the more charming.
Taking the song off in another direction are some carefully crafted guitar lines and an almost dub like bass that force your head down so you can help but stare at your shoes. Add to this a vocal line that is part youth bumpkin, and part Emo (a much over used word admittedly, but if the boot fits) and you can't get much more of an eclectic mix.
The 17 year old duo that is I Was A Cub Scout have a commendable lack of regard for genre. Rightly so if this is the kind of thing that results from a blatant disregard for labelling and order in the world of music. Sounding cute, miserable, camp, and enthusiastic all at once is a tall order but I Was A Cub Scout do it with ease. If only they were still Cub Scouts, they'd have a nice new merit badge for their mums to sew on their jumpers.
