The Icarus Line are due to return after a three year hiatus with new album Black Lives at the Golden Coast, and, as a prelude, release their first single of new material, Gets Paid. Occupying a sort of grey area between indie rock and roll, glam and punk, T I L need to figure out where their allegiances lie.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm all for cross-genre meddling, in fact I'm a dear advocate of it, but only if what you gain from such an operation sounds distinct. Too often we are presented with a band who claim to be 'experimental' but leave us with a sound that is neither here nor there, something which we've heard before but in a slightly different guise.

We've all heard The Icarus Line before, even if you've never heard of the actual band. Think a kind of Strokes indie crossed with The Dandy Warhols rock and roll and your half way there. In regards to the actual single it appears that T I L have dropped their anti-fashion credentials they used to boast about and have hopped on the mainsteam. Plinky pianos and a driving guitar bounce the track along amiably enough, while singer Joe Cardemone delivers his vocal line with due swagger and sleaze. However, the sum of the parts add up to less than they should. Not bad, just not memorable enough.
