It was about this time two years ago that iLiKETRAiNs first appeared on my radar with A Rook House For Bobby. Since then their mini album Progress - Reform has reinforced their position as one of the most exciting, if miserable, bands in Britain at the moment.
The Deception finds the band carrying on in a similar vein to the one they left us with on Progress - Reform, except they've honed their craft even further.
The Deception bides its time, brooding like a swell in a darkened ocean before it finally crashes into life in the most disturbing and beautiful way possible. Being masters of dynamics, iLiKETRAiNs handle this with the usual grace and theatricality we've come to expect. Indeed when vocalist David Martin exclaims "England expects" you feel as if you're caught up in some kind of bizarre mash of a Vaughan Williams pastoral symphony and a Turner painting. On first listen, it would appear that iLiKETRAiNs haven't progress too far over the last few years, but if anything the three songs on this single point towards a band that are just getting better and better.
"All I ever wanted was a little recognition" intones David Martin at the mid point of this journey through raw nerves. It surely can't be long before iLiKETRAiNs get the recognition they deserve.
