International Pony - My Mouth (Skint)
UK release date: 8 March 2004
International Pony - My Mouth
Once in a while, an artist comes along that encapsulates all the fun, surprise, danger and promise inherent in all your favourite records, and takes it to an all-new celestial level. However, on this evidence, Hamburg trio International Pony aren't likely to be amongst your own private pantheon of greats.

Don't get me wrong. My Mouth has enough bonkers and genuine punk spirit, allied to some perverse sounding synths wobbling about in simpatico with the demented vocals. Those selfsame vocals even manage to blurt out the immortal line "Your hair is short/ The night's so long", but despite all the disparate detail and tense lust, the parts just don't add up to anything more than a fractured whole.

For me the best moments on this three-mix set are the unforgiving, relentless (and very German) tech-house beats on the Jackmate Dust Mix, and the tribal touches on Les Robbespierres Version, which sound an awful lot like the Burundi-style drumming on Fleetwood Mac's Tusk. Either that, or I've become the Trainspotter's equivalent of punch-drunk.
