Think of some unlikely duets - Bing Crosby and David Bowie anyone? Van Morrison and Cliff Richard for sure. Yet it's unlikely that anyone would ever have thought of teaming a gravel-voiced ex-Screaming Trees vocalist together with a whispy voiced chanteuse for Scottish indie types Belle & Sebastian.
Yet Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell have indeed collaborated for a whole album, and this cover of the Hank Williams classic is the first result. It may seem an odd pairing, but it's utterly compelling. Lanegan and Campbell's voice go together like fish and chips, the bluesy guitar riff rings out like a scene from a David Lynch film, and the whole thing plays like a Lee Hazelwood & Nancy Sinatra for a new generation.
It also sounds completely unlike anything either party have ever done before - miles removed from the wistfulness of Campbell's former band, and very different to Lanegan's solo records or his work with Queens Of The Stone Age. In fact, it's the best thing either of them have ever done, and hopefully this will signal the start of a long and fruitful partnership.
