The Jai-Alai Savant - White On White Crime (City Slang)
UK release date: 23 April 2007
As any crazed scientist in possession of a lab full of hastily created freaks and hundreds of cast-off suns will tell you, fusion is always a tricky beast. The Jai-Alai Savant seem to have it down to a fine art however. Not for them some mutant fish bird capable of saving the world at the zero hour; nope instead they've turned their attention on jamming together assorted strains of music.
A slight hint of a dub/reggae influence builds things from the bottom up. They've added pinches of funk (courtesy of a straining brass section), punk and lashings of pop just to ensure there's a beauty gene in there somewhere. The result is almost unclassifiable, although it's by no means as testing as some of the material on their album Flight Of The Bass Delegate.
White On White Crime is bouncy and contagious and will surely soundtrack the first rays of the summer for those willing to take a chance on a band that don't quite sound like anyone else at the moment.
