"I guess it must've helped a bit that everything has an Asian twist" proclaims the B-side on this single. That must be one of the greatest truisms in modern music. The emergence of "desi-beats" has been helped by the success of Panjabi MC and the likes of Dr Dre and Timbaland showing their progressive side by taking an ethnic spin on hip-hop.
Eyes on You starts with a brief piano intro before the "Asian Craig David" begins his smooth vocals. The beats aren't specifically Asian, there's a tinge of Latin in the sparse guitars, but this track has the Rishi Rich trademark stamped all over it.
It's a fine track from the guy that could well have followed the Asian stereotype into the medical world. Jay Sean followed nothing but his heart and is one of the emerging stars of UK R&B. Check out the B-side Me Against Myself which displays fantastic humour: "Mummy and Daddy I want to be a pop star / Sit back down", complete with Goodness Gracious Me accent. On the evidence of this the NHS' loss is music's gain.
