Mancunian songsmith Jim Noir re-releases his single from last year, My Patch, in May. Here's what we had to say about the song on its original release in March 2005.
My Patch bears the legend "Everything by Jim Noir". 22-year-old Mancunian
Noir is clearly not a man to underplay his talents, and if My Patch is a
reliable indicator, he's got an awful lot to shout about. In this case, four
examples of unimpeachable song craft, that could only have been learned at The
Brian Wilson Institute Of Pop Technique.
While the Smile-isms are all present and correct, the collected tuneage of My
Patch is no by rote exercise. The boy Noir adds his own wraith-like element to
the Wilson vision, and arrives at a place not a zillion miles away from Jim
O'Rourke's eerie alt-pop.
Better value for the four numbers here is gonna be hard to find in this or
any other year. Just one thought occurs though - perhaps the legend "Everything
by Jim Noir" refers to more than the music on this reflective disc: Perhaps the
Creator is amongst us. You heard it here first, pilgrims.
