Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong - Where Do You Go (Mercury)
UK release date: 26 May 2008
At the start of the year, there were the usual 'ones to watch in 2008' lists going around, and one name on seemingly every list was the rather unwieldy moniker of Joe Lean And The Jing Jang Jong.
It's anyone's guess why Joe Lean and his merry bunch of men captured everyone's attention. Whether it be the ridiculous band name, the overtly stylish videos and photoshoots or simply the fact that Joe Lean himself was already reasonably well known as the ex-drummer in the Pipettes and an actor with parts in The Tudors and Peep Show under his belt. One thing is certain though, it couldn't have been their music.
For Joe Lean And The Jing Jang Jong are as utterly rubbish as their name. This is the very definition of lazy, mediocre, indie rock. It's as if Razorlight tossed off a B-side in their sleep, and then had second thoughts about releasing it. It makes The Enemy sound fun, sparkly and inspiring. And it will, inevitably, be bought in Tescos by millions of lads who think they're being a bit edgy and cool, and will probably immediately trot off to have their hair cut exactly like Joe Lean himself. And in a few years time, they'll look back on themselves and feel very embarrassed about the whole thing.
